This rare cigar is the ninth time that Cohiba has made a Limited Edition and it was originally intended for release in 2021, to commemorate the brand’s 55th anniversary.
The name Cohiba is taken from the word used by the island’s indigenous population, the Taino Indians, to describe the rolled leaves that they smoked. It can quite legitimately be argued that it was the first name used for cigars, at least in Cuba.
The brands was created in 1966 for former President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret but now world famous, El Laguito factory, where they are still rolled today.
For the next 16 years these exclusive cigars were only produced for Fidel Castro to enjoy personally, and occasionally present as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats. In his famous 1994 interview with Cigar Aficionado Castro said of the brand “in my view, it was the best cigar available. I did not like any others after that”.
After its commercial launch in 1982 Cohiba quickly established itself as Cuba’s flagship brand and the world’s number one luxury cigar. Today it remains famous throughout the world for the quality of the tobacco used in its blend and attention to detail in its construction.
The 55 Aniversario is a unique size from Habanos and it measures 5 7/8” (150mm) x 57 ring gauge. The shape is known as a Victoria in the factories of Cuba and is the second widest Limited Edition ever made, with only the 2014 Cohiba Robusto Supremos being a single ring gauge point heavier.
They are presented in varnished boîte nature boxes of ten cigars with each cigar dressed with an additional foot band.
As with all previous Cohiba Limited Editions, the 55 Aniversario is sure to be a much sought-after addition to the collection of cigar aficionados around the world.
